11th Congress of the International Rhinologic Society

29 October 2005

The 11th Congress of the International Rhinologic Society combined with the 55th Australian Society Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting.

Venue: Sydney
Date: 25-29 October, 2005

Reported by Dr Gillian Dunlop, Otolaryngologist, Sydney

The Australian Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery was delighted to jointly hold its annual scientific meeting with the International Rhinology Society Meeting for 2005. The conference was attended by over 600 delegates from 45 countries, from as far afield as Sweden. The invited faculty came from 40 different countries though largely from USA, Europe, Japan and Korea. The Rhinologic Societies of these 4 countries participated by chairing panel discussions and instructional sessions.

In all, delegates were offered over 95 invited papers, 26 instructional sessions, 6 plenary and 7 panel discussions. The 4 cadaver dissections were fortuitously diseased making for a more realistic teaching situation with Profs Stammberger, Kennedy, Casiano and Wormald. Breakfast sessions were dynamic though tended to attract a younger crowd, as they commenced at 6.45am!

Congratulations are given to Prof P J Wormald for the solid scientific basis of the meeting. Balancing the pragmatism of surgical experience and instruction were sessions exploring the putative etiology and pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis. Delegates enjoyed the lively debate between Prof Ponikau (supporting a fungal platform) and Claus Bauchert (super antigen) and Silvain Lacroix (intracellular staph. aureus).

The ground breaking work of Dr Christopher Brown Australia created much curiosity and enthusiasm. He presented "Safety and Feasibility of Catheter Based Dilatation of Sinus Ostea". Likening the situation to angioplasty where cardiologists adopted the procedure due to lack of interest by cardio-thoracic surgeons, he urged our continued watchfulness as this procedure develops from its infancy. Prof Roy Casiano gave an outstanding presentation on anatomical landmarks in advanced sinus disease. Professor Wolf Mann spoke both at the IRS and ASOHNS meeting, where he was joined by Prof Clough Shelton. Similarly Dr Thomas Romo spoke both at the IRS and the Australian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery Meeting. Delegates enjoyed the high standard of their contributions.

During the Congress Dinner, the Congress President, Mr Kevin Kane passed the Presidency of IRS over to Prof Desiderio Passali. He, in turn, announced the next IRS Congress to be held in Venice in 2007. Congratulations to Mr Kane and the organising committee for a fabulous conference. The smooth running, educational value and vitality will be hard to surpass.
